Zero Point Sonamarg

Snow for most of the year, 25 km beyond Sonamarg on the road over Zoji La

About Zero Point Sonamarg

Zero Point lies about 25 km beyond Sonamarg town, on the road that climbs over the Zoji La pass towards Ladakh. At around 3,500 m (11,480 ft) it is under snow for most of the year: glaciers, white peaks and a cold wind, even in July.

It is the place to play in the snow. Sledge rides, snow bikes and yak rides run through the season, and the glacier views make it one of the most photographed stops of a day in Sonamarg.

There is no mobile network and there are no shops, so come prepared. Carry warm jackets and sunglasses, as the sun reflecting off the snow is strong. The road is open from about May to September and closes when snow shuts Zoji La.

How to get there

From Srinagar, drive 80 km to Sonamarg on NH-1, the Srinagar to Leh highway, which takes about 2.5 hours. Zero Point is 25 km further on towards Zoji La, another 45 minutes to an hour. Srinagar airport is about 115 km away.

Take a local taxi from Sonamarg for the last stretch; private cars and tourist taxis may also go as far as Zero Point. The last 10 to 15 km are steep and narrow and stay snow-covered even in summer.

The road is open only from May to September and closes in winter when snow blocks Zoji La. June to September gives the clearest roads.

At about 3,500 m (11,480 ft), well above Sonamarg town at about 2,740 m, it is cold even in July: bring jackets, and take it slowly if you have breathing problems. There is no mobile network. Indian visitors need no special permit; foreign nationals should register at the Sonamarg police station.
